Ble Mae Bilaadi? translated from the Welsh (ble mae) where is my, and Arabic (bilaadi), country, is a dance and poetry film made in 2020, in collaboration with the National Poet of Wales, Hanan Issa. The work explores the dichotomy between having homes and families in Wales, as well as in Iraq and Lebanon where the political climates are temperamental and unstable.
We connected on how we both long for our Middle Eastern cultures, and have fear around whether they will be destroyed through adversity of war. Whilst doing what we can to preserve our Arabic identities, the project explores what it means to be Welsh, and living in Wales, as a person of colour in in 21st century.
The film was selected to represent culture in Wales during her late Royal Majesty's visit to the Senedd, Welsh Government 10 year Anniversary in 2021. As well as studied and explored by secondary schools in South Wales.
